We completed a Far Ride

A thousand K's in less than 24 hours. What better place to start a Far Ride than in Nevertire!

We arrived in Nevertire, New South Wales, Australia on Thursday afternoon, checked into the hotel and had a nice evening meal and a good sleep. Nevertire is a community in New South Wales, population 103, has a pub with a hotel (4 rooms but can sleep about 20 people), and a small store/cafe. The hotel is very basic, you share a bath, the rooms have beds, as many as they can cram in the room and that is it. If you request a double it is bunk bed with a double bed on the bottom and single up top. The first room we were in could have slept 5, the next night we had to move to another room and that room slept 6. It was rented to some contractors that were not going to be there that night so they cleaned it, moved their stuff in a corner and we slept there. Friday night the pub was hopping with a full range of customers and the juke box blared until very late. True Australian flavor and you have to love it! The owners of the pub were on holiday and a friend of theirs, David, was taking care of the business. He was very friendly and made us feel at home. The gal behind the bar was from Belfast, Ireland and was working in Australia for one year. She started out in Sydney and ended up in Nevertire. She took good care of us during our stay.

Friday morning we got up, had an early lunch and at 11:46 AM we got our starting docket (location, time, dated stamped receipt) and took off to start our ride.  We planned our ride with the assistance of several Far Riders and the plan was to leave Nevertire head north to Cobar, get fuel, then toward Bourke and return to Nevertire with another fuel stop in Cobar since there is no fuel in Nevertire.  We did just that, plan the ride and ride the plan.  When we left Nevertire it was in the heat of the day, only requiring one layer of clothing under the riding gear.  The road was in good shape, we noticed that the rights of ways were mowed down nicely so that you had a good view for wildlife.  There were a couple herds of goats and sheep along the way but they did not seem to be suicidal and were off of the road.  There were a few emus off the road, they really are funny looking and they do not act very smart.  On the turnaround trip at Cobar, we had a candy bar and something to drink and added a layer of clothing as the sun would be going down soon.

It was the most spectacular sunset I have experienced in quite some time.  In front of us was the nearly full moon with the bluest sky with a layer of rose colored sky and behind us was the sunsetting.  It was surreal and magical.  There was only one or two kangaroos spotted and they were both sitting alongside the road most likely enjoying the nice crisp, fresh air that we were.

We arrived back safe and sound at Nevertire at 6:45pm and clocked 692 kilometers in 7 hours.  We ate and off to bed for a rest.

Saturday morning we had to clock at least 308 KM’s before 11:45am, so we left at 7:35AM. It was very cool when we left, 2 layers of clothes under the riding gear and the electric jacket on did the trick. We had bought some silk glove liners in Tamworth and they worked remarkably well.  Jonnie added a pair of Smart Wool socks to the Drymax socks and her feet stayed nice and toasty. We stopped and bought fuel in Narromine and had an uneventful ride into Bathurst.

Check in time was 11:15 to 11:45 AM and we arrived promptly at 11:16 with 1005.1 KM!   What an awesome location locate a race track and end your first Far Ride.  The racetrack is located on the side of a hill and overlooks the valley that the town of Bathurst sits in.  The race track is open to the public and considered city streets during non-race days.  Speed limit is 60kph!

Carl checking the mileage one last time.  We did it 1005.1 KM
